Irish culture is deeply rooted in Christian tradition although progressing secularisation of the society and recent child abuse scandals strongly weakened the position of Catholic Church in Ireland. Still more than half of Irish Catholics go to the church regularly and there is a strong bond to the legacy of St. Patrick.
Manifestations of faith are not confined to churches or religious activities only. Old and new signs are scattered across the country enabling Catholics to express their faith through visual communication in social and architectural environment.
Symbols however, don’t always bear a clear message. Sometimes they live their own lives apart from the original context and meaning and that’s the opportunity for photography….
